I've rediscovered an interesting biography. The experiments on oxygen were his greatest claim to fame. The chemist's name was Karl Wilhelm Scheele. Possibly, the described components of air as: "spoiled," or
"foul," air and the "fire" air (oxygen) and his experiments of the forementioned may solve the crisis.
