ADAPT, formerly the Spastics Society of India, was set up in 1972 by Dr. Mithu Alur. From a special school started with three children it has grown to provide services to more than 3000 children and 10,000 families annually. Services include assessment, treatment, inclusive education, continuum of support services for inclusion, counseling, skills training and job placement. ADAPT also works to influence changes in policy at the national level which impacts all marginalized groups across the country.
A MODEL INCLUSIVE HUB - Our centres in Colaba and Bandra focus on education for ALL students, with or without disability. Our centres stand out as unique models, where we demystify special education and encourage inclusion within our community of stakeholders, the local political community leaders, principals of mainstream schools, people working in the field of disability and all others interested in creating an inclusive environment. It is here that demonstration of our work can be observed on a daily basis.
NATIONAL JOB DEVELOPMENT CENTRE (NJDC): Set up in 1989 the National Job Development Centre (NJDC) is the vocational branch of ADAPT. It is an initiative in the area of employment for persons with disability, with a vision of empowering youth with disabilities with job skills and social skills, thereby supporting them in their quest for employment.
TRAINING & PEDAGOGY: Based on the philosophy of universal access, equality and social justice our training courses at ADAPT's School of Post Graduate Studies are focused on the relevance and development of structural and curricular considerations for people with disabilities. Embedded in each course is the philosophy of inclusion.
ADAPT RIGHTS GROUP: The ADAPT Rights Group (ARG) is a group of young able and disabled activists who advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. The activities undertaken by the ARG include awareness and empowerment courses for people with and without disability, access audits for corporations to determine if their premise is disability friendly, and advocating for disability friendly public places, public transportation and work spaces.
SERVING THE COMMUNITY: ADAPT's Community Services are spread through various slums in the city of Mumbai. Our 6 anganwadis (pre-school nurseries ) provide care and support to 1500 families through direct contact. Over 15,000 households are impacted by our indirect services and community awareness programmes.
NARIKA SHAKTI: Empowerment of women through income generation is the main aim of Narika Shakti. The programme supports mothers of our students, who are from the economically underprivileged strata of society, by helping members realize their own strengths and providing a platform for them to get trained in various skills.
MITHU ALUR FOUNDATION: ADAPT is now moving towards creating an inclusive village model in Maharashtra under the aegis of The Mithu Alur Foundation. Through the Foundation, the inclusive village model will be created which has schools, hospitals, medical services, livelihood through skills training programmes, women's empowerment.
