The U.S. House of Representatives unveiled a bill that would demand a 20% cut in carbon emissions nationwide while requiring every region of the country to produce a quarter of its electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar by 2025.

The ambitious Waxman-Markey The ambitious Waxman-Markey bill is a major step in the right direction, as it includes a very strict cap and trade system and a new standard for renewable energy that will seek to lead our nation into a future of energy independence. Lawmakers have called out that goal as being unrealistic because the natural resources and technology needed to meet it do not currently exist. While the Waxman-Markey bill goes further than the current White House plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions, some say it doesn't go far enough. The Waxman-Markey bill was written by Democratic Representatives Henry Waxman of California, chair of the Oversight Committee, and Edward Markey of Massachusetts, chair of the global warming committee.
