After years of climate inaction -- China recently surpassed the U.S. as the world's largest emitter of CO2 -- the country is ramping up efforts to transition to a clean-energy economy.

The Chinese government announced a plan to produce 20 percent of it's energy from renewable sources by 2020 and is expected to spend billions on green technology as part of its economic stimulus package.

China is also working toward railway expansion, coal plant modernization, improving land use planning, and more.

In recent months, a Green Building Council launched to certify energy efficient construction following increased interest among developers -- more than 150 projects registered for LEED certification in China over the past two years.

Although China's global warming emissions continue to rise as it's economy expands, it's a relief to see the Chinese government actively addressing -- and beginning to combat -- the climate crisis.
