Obama: 'America is Ready to Lead' on Climate Change
U.S. President Barack Obama took significant steps indicating that climate change, energy and environmental issues would be major issues of his administration in his first week in office. After moving to reverse potentially damaging climate policy ordered by President Bush, Obama declared:
"To protect our climate and our collective security, we must call together a truly global coalition.... The days of Washington dragging its heels are over.... My administration will not deny facts -- we will be guided by them."
Todd Stern, who took part in the Kyoto Protocol negotiations under President Clinton, was named special envoy for climate change by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. This signifies a bold step toward the UNFCCC's goal of finalizing a groundbreaking international agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
“A new day is dawning in the U.S. approach to climate change and clean energy,” said Stern.

President Obama and Secretary
President Obama and Secretary Clinton are continuing to show that they are going to make addressing global warming a top priority as they are putting their team in place in record time. Oh how refreshing a change from the last eight years of no leadership and no progress. So now we have real leadership on this issue, let's hope that we can make real progress by Copenhagen. I discuss some of the hints of that change that Clinton and Todd Stern outlined here: http://tinyurl.com/US-envoy.
This team will have to get up to speed fast, start to reach out to other countries, and begin to flesh out the US positions as the pace of the negotiations are set to pick up speed following the meeting in Poznan, Poland this past December. In just over 60 days, this team will be sitting with other countries at the negotiating table as the next international negotiations will be held the end of March in Bonn, Germany.

To make change happen, I will
To make change happen, I will make utmost efforts to spread these ideals through education and information. For this, I do undertake that:
? I will replace one two-mile car journey per week by walking, cycling or taking a bus. Over the year, this will stop around 27kg of carbon dioxide being emitted. We would need nine trees to absorb this amount from the atmosphere.
? In the next year I will plant one tree either in my garden or as part of a community forest. Amongst other benefits, this will remove around 300kg of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over the next 100 years.
? I will put a ‘water hippo’ in my cistern to reduce the amount of water used per flush. At an average of four flushes a day, this will save 4,380 litres of water in a year, the total consumption by one person in some African countries.
? I will turn the tap off when I clean my teeth. If I brush my teeth for four minutes a day, this will save around 17,520 litres over the year, a saving of about Rs.1800 if my water is metered.
? I will turn the thermostat on my gas-fired central heating down by one degree centigrade. Over the year, this will save around 235kg of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere – the amount absorbed by around 80 trees.
? I will replace one lightbulb in my house with an energy saving version. Over the year, this will result in 20kg less carbon dioxide being emitted into the air, the same as that absorbed by seven trees.
? I will start re-using plastic bags when shopping. If I throw out four fewer bags a week, this prevent 2,288 plastic bags ending up in a landfill site, where they would take 20 years to decompose.
? I will switch off my television rather than leave it on stand-by. This will save around 30kg of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere – we would need 10 trees to absorb this amount.
? I will hang out, rather than tumble dry, one load of washing per week. Over the year, this reduced use of electricity will save over 78kg of carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere, equivalent to the amount absorbed by 26 trees.
? I will replace my daily bath with a normal shower. This will save 50 litres a day and 18,250 litres over one year, which is more than that used by an entire African family of five over the same period.
