Wal-Mart is the biggest retailer on the planet.
This is a scary thought but the nearly 40-year-old company continues to work to become more sustainable.
Most recently Wal-Mart announced a partnership with universities around the world to establish a green index for all the products they sell in their stores around the world.
A consortium of NGOs and businesses, with the help of these universities is collaborating to create the world’s first consumer sustainability index.

MillerCoors recognizes its ability to make a positive impact on our environment. The brewery is on the right track, according to a new sustainability report released by the joint venture between Miller and Coors Brewing companies.
On its way to running a zero-waste operation, MillerCoors reused or recycled 98 percent of all brewery in 2008 waste including glass, paperboard, plastics, metals and byproducts, according to the report.

This Saturday, July 18th is Mandela Day. This day serves to honor Nelson Mandela’s amazing life and the influence he has had. It is also a global call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make a change in the world around them.
Organizers are asking people around the world to take some time to make a contribution on Saturday and everyday! This year, New York City will be the home of Mandela Day with a massive concert at Madison Square Garden featuring Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Will.i.am, Aretha Franklin, Wyclef Jean, Cyndi Lauper, and many more.

For the first time in history, more people live in urban cities than in small cities.
This has a massive effect on the fight against climate change. In many ways it is up to the efforts of those within these highly populated urban areas to set the example for the sustainability effort globally.
A new report by Living Cities looks into this and works through to answer just how urban sustainability efforts can and must drive America’s climate change policies.

The 21st Navajo Nation Council voted "green" and passed the enactment of the Navajo Green Economy Commission this week.
The coalition developed this legislation to support the creation of hundreds of Green Jobs on the Navajo Nation.
Over fifty supporters from across the Arizona reservation gathered in front of the Navajo Nation Education Building and peacefully marched a quarter of a mile in green "Green Jobs" shirts to the Navajo Nation Council Chambers.

As the population of the world continues to grow, industrial farming demands may soon exceed the earth's capabilities.
According to an interesting podcast from Scientific American’s “60-Second Earth” weekly series, we may be running out of dirt.
Destructive farming has put a dent in the earth and it’s precious soil and air. To be proactive, we must find ways to practice more efficient farming.

Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Jesse McCartney, and will.i.am were among the stars to honor Nelson Mandela on his 91st birthday at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Saturday.
Thousands were in attendance -- with many more watching online -- to celebrate the life and legacy of South African social activist Nelson Mandela. France's first lady Carla Bruni made her American stage debut alongside Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart (see video below).

Copenhagen, Denmark is the site of the COP15 conference that will likely be a vital step in creating new global protocol to fight climate change.
From December 7th through the 18th, over 170 governmental representatives will come together for critical climate change discussions. This conference will be the last time these key representatives meet on a governmental level before the Kyoto Protocol expires and must be renewed in 2012.

This September, the U.S. Senate will vote on the “American Clean Energy and Security Act” passed in the U.S. House of Representatives this summer. This landmark bill will revitalize our economy by creating millions of new jobs, increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and preserve our planet by reducing the pollution that causes global warming.

The U.S. Postal service is making a huge green leap and showing the nation that they’re serious about going green.
The USPS building in New York City turned a massive 2.5 acre roof into a green mecca. It is the next in many sustainability projects the USPS has taken on.
The seven story building will now have one of the largest green roofs in the country. It will not only serve as a park and open space for employees, but will also save energy and reduce storm water runoff.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has announced plans to fly from Norway over the Arctic Ocean to visit the Norwegian research vessel Lance near the North Pole on September 1.
This expedition was planned to spark interest from the world leaders set to meet in Copenhagen this December. Hopefully this trip will bring new attention to global warming issues and will encourage participants to make promising changes at the conference.
The Secretary General even visited Antarctica in 2007 to call more attention to climate change, clearly he believes in making a real difference!

Matt Damon is at it again!
Actor and advocate Matt Damon's H2O Africa and the WaterPartners International have partnered merged to create water.org, a non-profit that provides the developing world with access to safe water and sanitation. Its mission is to assist the 2.5 billion people that lack clean sanitation and 890 million people without safe water worldwide.”
Water.org is making great strides and currently has projects in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Bangladesh, India, Philippines, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Rainforest Action Network (RAN) organizers Joshua Kahn Russell and Kimia Ghomeshi have embarked on a on a tour of Canada and America with the bands Propagandhi and Strike Anywhere and the organization Substance to educate, organize, and mobilize people to stop a disastrous oil project called the Tar Sands.
They are documenting it all in a series for Current Green (see video below).
Every night, Russell and Ghomeshi speak with the bands on stage and to the audience to raise awareness of this horrible oil project.

PepsiCo Inc., already a corporate leader in sustainability efforts, is taking further steps towards greening their manufacturing process.
The company opened a manufacturing plant in China that is specifically designed to be more environmentally friendly than plants in the past.
The new build is expected to use 22% less water and 23% less energy than others in the country.

A recent study conducted by a team at the University of California, Irvine, found that women living within 1.9 miles of a major roadway in Los Angeles are 128% more at risk of giving birth prematurely.
The same study found that these women were also 33 to 42 percent more likely to develop preeclampsia -- a condition characterized by high blood pressure and can cause doctors to induce premature labor in order to save the mother’s life.
Unfortunately for many mothers-to-be, picking up and moving to avoid the affects of smog are not exactly an option.

When world leaders gather in Copenhagen this December they will be discussing some of the most important and pressing climate issues facing the world today.
These world influencers are leaving no green stone unturned as they make an effort to environmentally spruce up their trips to the event.
Denmark has developed a luxurious and eco-friendly solution to the issue of ground transportation throughout the conference.
The attendees will be transported in limousines that run on experimental biofuels made from plant waste. How creative!

The University of North Carolina's water program, that strives to bring clean water and enhanced sanitation to areas of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, has received an award worth up to $8.5 million which will be used to expand the program.
The project, which is a collaborative effort from three university programs, is called WaterSHED- Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Enterprise Development.
