Global warming is the most important issue of the 21st century and we ignore it at the peril of our very lives. If we, the humans of this planet, do not start making radical changes in our life styles there will be no humans in the 22nd Century.
As a nation, we need to start living in harmony with nature and learn to protect the very earth that gives us life. When the seas and the rivers have no more fish, when the earth can no longer provide nourishment, when the trees no longer give fruits then we will realize that money cannot be eaten! Congress needs to encourage alternate energy solutions and/or usage with grants and laws i.e. return of the electric car, solar and wind energy, higher energy efficiency standards for homes, require measures to capture and reuse grey water, cities should be encouraged to remove codes that require lawns and alter them to allow naturally drought tolerant plants, tax credits or rebates should be expanded for homes that add water cisterns or similar systems that capture and store rainwater, etc. These are just a few items that should be encouraged and would start helping to save the planet. Congress must act now not a year or tens years from now if we, as a people, are to save our planet.
The United States of America must develop alternative sources of energy, which are environmentally friendly, renewable and sound. Why would Congress not wish to see this nation free of its oil dependency? This Country needs to encourage, with grants and laws, a bio fuel solution for our transportation as well as solar and wind energy for our homes. There are a number of enterprising people and companies working on ethanol derived from corn, straw, wheat and corn discards as well as the Brazilian solution with sugar cane. It is time that Congress voted the monies, time, energy and resources of this nation on Alternative Energy Solutions which the majority of the people in this Country agree is something which is absolutely needed and more than past its time to be happening. Liquid coal is not the solution due to the high-energy cost and high pollution cost of making it. Nuclear power is also not the solution to any of the energy problems of this nation or the world for that matter, especially considering the problem of disposing of the uranium, which will be radioactive and pose a threat for at least 10,000 years!
It is time that the American carmakers got out of bed with the oil companies. The lack of foresight by the American automaker has not only cost them money it has cost American citizens jobs. GM deserves to go out of business just because they destroyed their own best idea - the electric car. If they will not wake up and help the environment willingly then Congress needs to make sure that they do by raising the standards. The car companies can raise the standards (just look at the hybrid cars) but they do not want to get out of bed with the oil companies. They honestly do not care about the environment or their own workers because if they did they would have already made the changes years ago.
Global warming is the most
