Bamboo can be grown commercially in the US. It is hardy in zones 7,8 and 9. Growing particularly well in the south and Pacific coast states. The USDA worked hard right into the 1960's to establish this as a commercial crop but the farmers were reluctant. Maybe with the big upsurge in interest in renewable resources more US farmers will start to cultivate it.
