I've been using bamboo (wooden) spoons for years and my daughter uses a bamboo cutting board. She sells them through her Pampered Chef home parties and they say that bamboo does not hold germs like wood cutting boards and spoons.
They are great and have worn well. If bamboo is renewable faster than trees, why not use it as much as we can.
