An excellent way to keep the house cool is to install solar blocking screen (a 90% blocking material is available from realgoods.com and also many other places) on the outside of all south, east and west facing windows. We have simply stapled ours on. These stay on at our house from about June 1 to the end of September then are stored to re-use the next cooling season. The difference in indoor temperature is amazing. We use no a/c here in Santa Fe, NM and are totally comfortable. No fossil fuels required! (It helps to open your windows at night).
