We are so proud of our Friends of Live Earth Run for Water events being held around the world, and we are thrilled to highlight The 2010 High Country Hustle, a 6K Run/Walk for Water, took place on April 18, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Creede, CO. The local event is an opportunity for the community and state to come together to raise awareness about water issues. This run is one of only two in the state and took place near the Headwaters of the Rio Grande in Creede, Colorado.

There is a $20 event fee, which will include an event t-shirt, a gift bag, and post-run/walk refreshments. All monies raised will be donated to the Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project. The mission of the Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project is “to restore and conserve the historical functions and vitality of the Rio Grande in Colorado for improved water quality, agricultural water use, riparian health, wildlife and aquatic species habitat, recreation and community safety while meeting the requirements of the Rio Grande Compact.”

In light of the recent passing of local leaders Doug Shriver and Ray Wright, who were so instrumental in the San Luis Valley water communities, individuals and groups are encouraged to participate in their memory.

The event began at 9:30am with speakers at the Creede Ball Park. At 10:00 am the run/walk began and participants traveledl along the running trail south of town, down the Airport Road to the Deep Creek Bridge on the Rio Grande, and back to town. Prizes from Kristi Mountain Sports in Alamosa, Colorado will be given to the first man and woman across the finish line. From 11:00am to 12:00pm Don Richmond, Scott Russell, and Creed de Avanzar of “The Rifters” performed live at the Creede Ball Park. The musicians have been kind enough to agree to play for the High Country Hustle for just donations. While the bands were playing, attendees had the opportunity to visit booths from local water and local natural resources entities. Additionally, we raffled off items donated by The Creede Hotel, San Juan Sports, and Rare Things. Furthermore, Tommyknockers Tavern and Cascadian Granola have donated gifts for all event participants.

The High Country Hustle will be a fun and exciting way for the community to come together and support water awareness and local water improvement activities.
