TOMS shoesTOMS is one of those feel good companies. In 2006, Blake Mycoskie started a shoe "project" with the dream to provide less fortunate children with shoes in Ethiopia, South Africa and in Argentina.

The California Academy of Science, located in San Francisco, CA opened the world's first green museum this month. After 10 years and $500 million, the Academy is becoming a cultural icon due to its sustainable architecture and in-house green practices.

unplugDid you know that electronic devices burn excess energy when not in use?

Even when switched "off," appliances and accessories like chargers for mobile phones, digital cameras, power tools, and television monitors continue to draw power as long as they are plugged into an outlet. This "phantom energy" use accounts for up to 10 percent of an individual's electricity use... that could be around $200 dollars per year for a typical home.

Here are a tips to combat the phantom load:

  • Unplug to save money! To make it easier you can also plug all devices into a surge protector that can be clicked on and off. Real Simple states, “Sixty to 80 percent of the electricity [TVs and DVDs] use is consumed while they’re idle.” Yikes!
  • Get organized! Store all chargers in one location and just retrieve when needed and return when item is fully charged. If they are plugged in, they are sucking up electricity whether charging a device or not.
  • Buy energy-efficient appliances. A list of products can be found at EnergyStar.gov.

live earth 07.07.07 cd/dvdLive Earth loves music. We believe the collaboration between music and public activism is a great way to draw attention and spread our important message.

But the music industry needs to take even greater strides in greening the industry and their products because along with all the benefits, like fantastic music and terrific entertainment, there are also some drawbacks: electronic waste.

We understand, putting on a performance takes a lot of material and most of the materials that are used aren't exactly eco-friendly like: tour bus emissions, the one billion polyvinyl chloride CD cases produced each year, light bulbs, merchandise and food packaging waste.

Slowly but surely, many labels, small and large, are starting to take the right steps to green the industry.

Thinking of ways to save money? Bring your lunch to work or school instead of ordering or buying. Plenty writes that, "average takeout meal costs $6, while brown-bagging it only costs $2 per day. Over a year, you could save $2000 if you simply brought a homemade lunch every day instead of eating out."

By bringing your lunch you have better control over how much you spend, how much you eat, and, you are forced to make better food choices. Having a hard time getting the process started? Here are a few tips to help.

  • Make enough food so that you have leftovers for the following days. Casseroles, stir-fry, meatloaf and pastas are great dinners that you can make in large amounts and bring to work for the weekdays.
  • Get creative with your meals and switch it up with one great purchase…if you have leftover chicken you can make a chicken salad, chicken soup, chicken fingers, ect… then every day can be mixed up but you’ll save by using the whole chicken

Are you a "climate voter" yet? The presidential election is less than a week away and now is as good time as ever to pledge to become one. On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Al Gore addressed the nation and called upon the youth to help repower America.

halloweenTrying to have a more environmentally friendly Halloween this year? It's not as hard as you might assume.

Just follow the suggestions below to find eco-friendly ways to celebrate the night.

Bag and Baskets

  • Skip the plastic bags and reach for something you already have like your pillowcase or a basket.
  • Jazz them up a little! Decorate them with a Halloween theme and reuse them year after year or decorate them to match your costume.

Costumes

  • Reuse costumes that you or your friends have already wore in the past.
  • Go to the local thrift store and collect items to create your perfect costume. FYI it’s easier to go with a costume already in mind that way you aren’t there for hours.

Decorations

  • Do you have any battery operated decorations? Use rechargeable batteries to lessen waste and save the environment
  • Bring the outdoors inside! The leaves may be falling and the natural look and smell of them could be just what your need to complete your decor.

apple's new macbook designEverybody's buzzing about Apple's brand new MacBook. Inside the Mac notebooks' updated, chic design is one of the greenest laptops in the industry, according to Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, who highlighted the company's commitment to advancing sustainable technology in his 2008 Environmental Update.

The MacBook's all-aluminum case and glass screen are recyclable. All internal components are BFR- and PVC-free and Apple eliminated mercury and arsenic from the MacBook display as part of its commitment to phase out the use of toxic chemicals.

The new MacBooks are lighter and slimmer, allowing a 41% cut on packaging and decreasing the carbon footprint of the product's entire life.

The MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air may be pricier than other laptops but by minimizing its impact on the environment, Apple's products are all the more attractive.

Join Live Earth in support of the Art of Living Foundation/ Stand Up Take Action's Mission Green Earth Campaign.  Eight years ago, at the Millennium Summit, 189 country heads committed to work together “to build a safer, more prosperous and equitable world for all by 2015.”   Mission Green Earth is one program in support of the seventh goal of the campaign: to ensure environmental sustainability.

This year, participants can show their support by joining Mission Green Earth in planting trees EVERYWHERE. The campaign is already active in India and in 88 other countries, and has a goal of planting 100 million trees before October 16th.  It is said that the average person utilizes the oxygen of 16 trees to survive his/ her lifespan. Let’s work together and take action between now and October 16th to plant 100 million native, locally appropriate trees to support environmental sustainability.

Dear friends,

We CampaignThe We Campaign, founded by our partner, Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection has a new 30-second ad to publicize an urgent message. Simple while making its point, the ad attacks "big oil" for spending "hundreds of millions of dollars to block clean energy" with "lobbyists, ads, even scandals." It's educational and yet ABC still won't air it.

Please join us and sign the petition asking ABC to reconsider and air the We Campaign ad tonight at: http://www.wecansolveit.org/page/s/ABC

  1. India didn't cause the climate crisis, but its population will bear some of the most damaging effects of global warming: flooding and drought.
  2. In Calcutta and Bangladesh, 60 million people are at risk of one day becoming refugees due to rising sea levels.
  3. A renowned Chinese scientist estimates that almost two-thirds of the country's glaciers could melt by 2050, bringing ecological catastrophe for the 300 million people downstream.
