The town has come together and created “walking buses” so the children are monitored on the way to school.
The number of children walking to school has taken a drastic dip in recent years for various reasons, but there is no reason why people shouldn’t help combat this! In this small town in Italy there are about 450 students that travel to school each morning by foot after the start of the program. “Walking buses” are exactly that, a bus route with a volunteer “driver” or leader, but not vehicle.
These types of programs are sprouting up around the United States now too. There are so many benefits to this! Not only does it help to reduce pollution and traffic jams, but it starts children off with what we hope will become life-long habits to walk instead of drive. It is estimated that the town’s walking buses have eliminated more than 100,000 miles of car travel.
