Water Conservation Tips From New Jersey
I concentrate on conserving water which is my main concern in regards to the global warming crisis. I conserve by not buying bottled water, filtering my tap water, installing a water saving shower head, cutting down on showers and flushing, not using a dishwasher, and reusing water for dish washing manually.
I attended Live Earth at Giants Stadium with my teenage son who walked away with a new perspective on his place in this world. He pledged to do all he can as a young man to preserve this planet. It truly touched him and that touched me, (and I have now passed on what I learned there to my coworkers) I hope Live Earth touches many around the world to carry its message in their hearts and actions every day so we can see solutions implemented in time.

I'm a bit mistified by the reference to not using a dishwasher as saving water. I have always heard that dishwashers use less water than washing by hand. And my own personal use would bear that out. Our dishwasher is rated to use 6 gallons of water per load. But that load most often contains 2-3 days worth of dishes. That would be in the range of 7-9 meals worth of dishes. I really doubt that even partially filling a sink for each of those 7-9 meals plus rinsing would use less than the 6 gallons.
By the way we always air-dry so there's no extra energy use there either.
I sure wish the "experts would be consistent in clarying this more though.
I appreciate Jan M's efforts
I appreciate Jan M's efforts to conserve water. I am just returning to live in the US after a decade in Europe and am struck by the amount of water that is wasted in American restaurants by giving customers huge glasses of water with too much ice, whether they want it or not. Waiters refill without asking if the customer needs more and before the glass is empty. Let's start refusing this automatic refilling and leaving water to be thrown out. This awareness will also contribute a bit on cutting down on the energy waste that goes into making ice.
