At the Clinton Global Initiative this week, actor and humanitarian Matt Damon announced that his charity, Water.org, will commit $2 million to provide 50,000 people in Haiti with safe water and sanitation over the next three years!
Additionally, Water.org has also launched a social media campaign so that anyone can participate in meeting the water challenge in Haiti.

Jessica Biel has just announced that she will be joining Isabel Lucas and Lupe Fiasco in scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro this January to help raise awareness for clean water with Summit on the Summit. They have all signed on to climb Africa’s highest peak – Mt. Kilimanjaro, at more than 19,000 feet – to raise awareness about the need for clean water worldwide.

This week's Global Wake Up call proved to be amazing with 2,632 events in 134 countries! There were tens of thousands of phone calls crashing government lines, unbelievable creativity and diversity of events, directly reaching heads of state and cabinet ministers from Australia to Europe.
This Wake Up call was covered by major news outlets all over the world. Europe's environment chief praised the mobilization and the UK Prime Minister became the first major world leader to agree to Avaaz’s demand to go to Copenhagen.

U.S. Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) introduced the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act on Capitol Hill today.
The legislation, which aims to cut carbon pollution and stimulate the economy by creating millions of jobs in the clean energy sector, is the Senate's version of the American Clean Energy and Security Act passed by the House of Representatives in June.
The Boxer-Kerry "Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act," is 821 pages, starting with a mandate by 2020 to curb the nation's greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent from 2005 levels. Many of the details will be left to negotiations with Democrats and Republican moderates on the senate floor.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority just launched the "Friend-a-Gorilla” campaign on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter. These endangered gorillas of Uganda are “appearing” online as part of a fundraising program that the Ugandan Wildlife Authority hopes will help save the endangered species.
The Wildlife Authority is hoping that fans will befriend a gorilla on Facebook or MySpace or follow it on Twitter in return for a minimum donation of $1. The money will be used to hire extra rangers to protect the gorillas and safeguard their habitat.

It's Autumn in Washington, D.C. and following a UN Climate Summit, the G20, and Climate Week, key U.S. energy legislation could be introduced in the Senate as early as Wednesday of this week.
Sens. John Kerry (D-MA) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) plan to introduce a version of the energy and climate change bill into the Senate that will look very similar to the legislation passed by the House of Representatives in June.
Will the U.S. approve new energy and climate legislation in advance of the December conference of the United Nations Climate Change Committee in Copenhagen?

It's Global Climate Week, with world leaders meeting at the UN in New York and a G20 summit in Pittsburgh discussing a global pact on climate change. As Live Earth moves forward with the second week of our #lovetheclimate giveaway to positively encourage Senatorial action on the Climate Bill, President Obama spoke to the G20 this morning on Global Warming. Yet the world questions the president's credibility on climate change in large part due to inaction on the Climate Bill.

Live Earth is proud to partner with Twestival Local, taking place September 10-13 in more than 130 cities around the world.
This is the second worldwide charity fundraiser this year organized by Twestival, Twestival Global, in February, raised more than $250,000 for charity:water in one day!
Twestival Local raises funds for a local charity selected by the volunteer event organizers in each city. Beneficiaries this weekend range from Miriam's Kitchen in Washington, D.C., to Cordaid Kenya in Nairobi, and Khushboo Welfare Society in Delhi.

The spot features veterans of both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and is aimed at pushing the Senate to pass its version of the American Clean Energy and Security (ACES) bill passed by the House this summer.

You do everything you can to reduce your carbon footprint in your lifetime, but what about reducing that of your slobbering best friend, or purring kitten? While it might not seem like you can’t do much to change your pet's carbon footprint, there really is. Here is a simple things you can do.
One of the easiest, but often looked over tip is to invest in a higher-quality pet food that lists beef, lamb, chicken or fish as the first ingredient rather than a by-product. This one small change can make a major impact on your pet’s health, and will greatly reduce the amount of poop left to scoop (another eco-friendly result!)

The 1 Reel Film Festival is part of the Bumbershoot 2009 Fest and will present over 100 U.S. and international short films over Labor Day weekend at Seattle Center, September 5-7, 2009. If you’re in the Seattle area this weekend you should definitely head over to check it all out!
The Live Earth Films are scheduled to be viewed on Sunday, Sept 6th at 5:30pm.

The US Open is going green again! This is the second year the NRDC has worked with the US Tennis Association to make the US Open a sustainable event.
One of tennis' four Grand Slam events each year, the US Open site at Flushing Meadows, New York will be visited by 700,000 spectators over the course of the two week tournament. For an event of this size, their sustainable actions have a ripple effect and inspires vendors to change and sell sustainable products.

We love green roofs! The idea, but more importantly the execution, of this environmentally beautifying technique is a wonderful way to reduce your carbon footprint.
Green roofs absorbs solar radiation and CO2, decreases storm-water runoff, gives shelter to animals that love the high altitude and gives people in planes a pretty view. Now why wouldn’t you want to plant a green roof if you can?

United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon stood on thinning Arctic ice when he urged member nations to agree to a new climate deal at the December UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.
Having departed the Norwegian capital, Oslo, yesterday, Mr. Ban made his way to the Svalbard archipelago off the northern coast, where he visited research stations and met with scientists, who updated him on the latest science regarding ice-melting.
"Now is the time for decision-making," the Secretary-General stressed. "We must seal a deal in Copenhagen for a global, equitable and comprehensive deal for the future of humanity and the future of Planet Earth."

Climate Week kicks off in New York City on Monday September 21st and Hugh Jackman will be there to get it started! Jackman will speak at a climate change forum in New York alongside world leaders including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. "
I hope to be a voice for the billion people in developing countries who will be the hardest hit by changing weather patterns, by the droughts and floods that destroy their crops and threaten their food security," Jackman said in a statement.

Instead of the mass quantities of greasy, unhealthy hot dogs, beer, popcorn and candy that is synonymous with sporting events, Yankee Stadium has officially taken a step into the health world!
Over the weekend a small fruit stand called "Farmer’s Market" was featured at the famous stadium where people were given a healthier option with less waste that the packaging that goes along with all the junk food normally consumed at games.
There is talk to place these fresh fruit stands at other stadiums around the country. We hope this idea takes off!
