NASA has always been at the forefront of new technology and innovative ideas and the latest project in its Greenspace Initiative is no different.

On August 25th, NASA plans to break ground on Sustainability Base -- the most environmentally-friendly building in the agency's history. The building is intended to be the "greenest" in the U.S. federal government.

Located at the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, the building will hopefully gain LEED platinum plus certification. NASA certainly has the right ideas; the Sustainability Base will be designed not to consume net energy -- it will actually be able to power itself! The building will also use 90% less potable water.

Rather than wasting energy and money on air conditioning, the building will be cooled using geothermal walls that route naturally cooled water from the ground through cooling panels inside.

Along with other eco-friendly ideas being implemented, NASA will encourage employees to participate in being green at their own individual levels. The building will keep track of each person’s level of energy efficiency and report it to their own laptops. This gives employees the information and tools needed to make green changes!

Sustainability Base is set to be completed by November 2011.
