Yet around one third of the population already lives in areas where water is physically or economically scarce due to insufficient investment in the necessary infrastructure, according to the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

The scary thing is that within the next 40 years there will be an additional 2.5 billion mouths to feed on earth and global food production will have to double. Given that one litre of water is needed to produce one calorie of food, by 2050 the world will need to find another 6,000 cubic kilometers of water annually - twice what is used today.
