Climate Crisis Solution #7: Fly Right
Flying on a jet is a great way to dump a whole lot of global warming gases into the atmosphere. A one-way flight from NY to LA makes each passenger responsible for one ton of CO2 emissions.
If you must fly, how can you reduce your impact?
- Fly direct whenever possible. Landing and taking off consume the most gas during the flight. During a short flight, taking off can account for 25% of the total fuel consumption. Try to limit your flights to distances of 600 miles or more.
- For shorter distances, take the train. Seriously. For shorter trips where the time difference is less pronounced, rail is the only way to go. Spend an extra hour or two and breathe easier.
- Fly during the day; one study showed that nighttime contrails create more warming.
- Fly on a newer, more fuel-efficient plane, such as the Airbus A340 or A380 or a Boeing B787. Customer demand (and the cost of fuel) will bring us more efficient planes!
- Flying for business? Meet online or through videoconference instead.

In response to Leah's
In response to Leah's comment, driving does save CO2 emissions but taking the train is really the best way, and even funner in my opinion. However, I (like Martha) have family spread all over the world and it is just not possible to either drive or take the train across the ocean to Europe or Asia. I am very environmentally conscious and flying is my big draw back. i would love to get advice on what to do.
For Leah, wouldnt turning
For Leah, wouldnt turning your car on and off everytime your at a stop light waste more gas to trun the car off and then turn everything on again? Just like a plane takes more gas on take offs and landings?? just putting that out there. but dont put co2 out there. not good!
Human caused global warming
Human caused global warming is biased, how can climate change be happening when its negative degrees? Gobal warming= happy planet
note i was NOT payed by an oil company to say that, im just a teenager
Hello! I try to live
Hello!
I try to live carefully, I changed my light bulbs, turn off my appliances at night, wash with cold water, do not use my drier, bring my bags when shopping, and substituted my car for public transit and bike. However, my family is spread around the world... and, although Skype and a Webcam are very helpful, nothing substitutes a BIG HUG... Please, keep me informed of all tricks available to reduce my impact as a regular plane traveler(once every 1-3 years). Thanks!
Martha
I haven't been on a plane in
I haven't been on a plane in 3 years and that was only because I didn't have enough time to make the 3 day trip each way to complete job I had to do and get home. Other wise, I drive everywhere, even if its from someplace like Charlotte to ABQQ or Las Vegas. Watching other people on our highways is way more entertaining the looking at the back of seat in a tin can sitting in a seat that was built for a kid (I'm not over weight, but adults don't have small waists). I like being able to stop anyplace I like, eat when I want, check out antique stores along the way, get off the interstate and take the side roads when I feel like it, letting my dog stick her nose out an open window in the rain. No Body can tell me that flying is easer and cheaper.
Rent a car if you drive a gas hog, the cost of a rental and the gas in it would save not only on worry (is it going to get me there) but it saves on the pocket too. The trick is to not rush, enjoy each mile and don't let the "I must be First" drivers stress you out. And PLEASE get your cell phone on a hand-free system before you trip. There are nice head-sets for the older phones and Bluetooth systems for the newer phones. Safety and fun makes the trip go by smoother.
A great way to conserve gas mileage is to increase the distance between you and the other drivers by at least one vehicle length (20 feet) front and back, it will increase your mileage by as much as 2-3 mpg. Even in the fast lane, show some respect for everyone around you and everyone's gas mileage will improve. When I'm sitting at a red light, I shut my engine off, because it saves me gas, saves the person front and back of on gas too.
The world needs a hybride
The world needs a hybride plane, what is taking the world so long? There is demand why is there no product?
Hi, I tried to moove on
Hi, I tried to moove on public transit, but in this country is very dangerous to use it, and then it nedds publics political, and then is it onle good wiches.
BYe try to inform to me of every class of every kind to reduce the impact to climate crisis.
Bye, Marielos
this is all good and welll
