Will You Celebrate Bike-to-Work Week?

bike to work week 2010May is National Bike Month! The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May 17-21 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 21.

Cycling is a great way to avoid traffic and a fun way to get around. It's also far less stressful on the environment than driving. Plus it's good for your health. While it may not be possible (or safe) for some of us to ride a bicycle to the office, we've got the entire month to celebrate two-wheeling as an alternative to motorized vehicles.

The Kansas City Star Editorial Board writes:

The goal of the week that began Monday and runs through Friday isn’t to turn the city into a car-free zone. But it is to encourage everyone to make a trip or two without a car. Walk or ride a bike to the grocery. Commute by bus or bike on a sunny day.

Here's a look at some Bike Week events happening in cities around the U.S. Will you ride your bike to work or on errands this week? Does your city make it's streets accessible for cyclists to share the road?

Los Angeles: This week's activities include the Blessing of the Bicycles tomorrow at the Good Samaritan Hospital, a bike ride in downtown on Wednesday morning, the annual Bike to Work Day on Thursday and Bike to School Day on Friday. Read more here and here.

Arlington, MA - "Bike commuting is a way of life," in this Boston suburb, which hosts a series of events including a film festival dedicated to two-wheeled travel. There's even more happening this week in Boston.

Baltimore is expecting more than 1,000 people to register for its 13th annual Bike to Work Day on Friday.

Austin, TX has a full calendar of Bike Month events available on the city website.

Santa Fe, NM and Northern Nevada both have Facebook pages devoted to Bike Week events.

Why is May Bike Month? We can't help but agree with the League of American Bicyclists clarification that "every month is Bike Month," so join the revolution and bike to work!
