Climate Crisis Solution #36: Decongest Downtown

URBAN CENTERS ARE THE WORLD'S BIGGEST SOURCES OF UNTAPPED ENERGY SAVINGS

Many of the best policies for minimizing car use in cities can also make them into healthier, more pleasant places to live and work.

Congestion Charging - Once suffering from crushing traffic congestion, London now charges drivers L8 per day ($15) to drive into the transit-friendly central business district. Traffic delays are down 22%, and carbon emissions have been cut by 16%.

Call-a-Bike - Many German cities have funny-looking red bicycles called Call-a-Bike neatly parked on sidewalks all across town. A half-hour ride costs about the same as the subway or bus.

Bus Rapid Transit
- In Paris, lanes along its most congested avenues have been exclusively dedicated to buses, bikes, and taxis. BRT has turned Parisian buses into fast, efficient, first-class transportation.
