Ford just announced plans to completely transform one of their plants into a "modern, flexible small car plant."
The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May 11-15 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 15.
Cycling is not only less stressful on the environment, it also makes you smarter! That’s right: riding a bicycle, like most forms of aerobic exercise, can actually improve cognitive function.
Editor's note: This is the first guest post from Max Gladwell.
Our children will inherit a world profoundly changed by the combination of technology and humanity that is social media. They'll take for granted that their voices can be heard and that a social movement can be launched from their laptop. They'll take for granted that they are connected and interconnected with hundreds of millions of people at any given moment. And they'll take for granted that a black man is or was President of the United States. What's most profound is that these represent parts of a greater whole. They represent a shift in power from centralized institutions and organizations to the People they represent. It is the evolution of democracy by way of technology, and we are all better for it.
The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fact-filled short film about the negative effects of our production and consumption patterns. The film is a cheerful but somewhat brutal look into how wasteful humans can be and exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues.
The thick-lined drawings of the Earth, a factory and a house are meant to convey the cycle of human consumption, as are the pictures of dark puffs of factory smoke and outlines of skulls and crossbones that represent polluting chemicals floating in the air. The Story of Stuff calls for the creation of a more sustainable and just world. It will definitely teach you something, while making you laugh and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced a $50 million funding program for farmers to make the switch to organic.
In an effort to encourage the nation to go organic a portion of the funding will be available to every state for farmers to apply for funds under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, administered by USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
How did you get to work today?
Since 1956, May has been recognized as National Bike Month. The third week in May is designated Bike to Work Week; and the third Friday of May is Bike to Work day. Maybe it’s time to put some air in your tires and hit the streets.
The League of American Bicyclists is the organization responsible for coordinating events all around the U.S. that highlight Bike to Work Day. According to TLAB more than 50% of the population lives within 5 miles of their workplace, which makes biking to work a very realistic possibility, for many people.
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a multiyear construction bill to devote $6.4 billion toward green school initiatives across the country.
Not yet passed by the Senate, the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act would support thousands of new jobs, reduce energy consumption and create healthier, cleaner environments for schoolchildren.
With similar bills threatened by veto during the Bush administration, this has a much better chance of this coming to fruition with President Obama' s school improvement projects as an element of his economic stimulus initiative.
Al Gore spoke to CNN last Friday about the dangers of global warming and how exactly the suffering economy and global warming crisis is intertwined. He discussed how the American economy needs to once and for all transition over to sustainable practices, as well as addressing recent polls that seem to reflect that Americans are not that concerned with climate change.
Are you ready for Memorial Day Weekend? We sure are!
There's really nothing more American than a Memorial Day BBQ with friends and family, so why not do so in an eco-friendly way and share the love?
Go reusable! Show off all your great summer colored dishes. But in case you must go disposable, be smart about it. Find products that are made from recycled materials or that are biodegradable. Plates and cups made from recycled materials are available at your local grocery store.
Al Gore and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discussed climate change at this week's World Business Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen (watch the summit live).
"We have to do it this year. Not next year - this year," said Gore. "The clock is ticking, because Mother Nature does not do bailouts."
Sadly there is still a relatively large percentage of people in this world that do not fully believe in global climate change and those who have completely dismissed it.
Seeking to fully understand the differing opinions in America, researchers at Yale University attempted to categorize these different views and found that there are essentially six American views on the issue: The Alarmed, the Concerned, the Cautious, the Disengaged, the Doubtful, and the Dismissive.
Painting rooftops white can make a great impact on global warming.
U.S. Energy Secretary Stephen Chu, a Nobel Laureate, noted that basic changes can have a great impact at a climate change symposium in London last weekend.
"If you take all the buildings and make their roofs white and if you make the pavement more of a concrete type of color rather than a black type... it’s the equivalent of reducing the carbon emissions due to all the cars on the road for 11 years," said Chu.
President Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court this week and since an appointment to the Supreme Court is lifelong, we hope she has strong green views.
From her stance on greenhouse gas regulations to her understanding of the EPA, there are many ways to better understand just what shade of green Sotomayor is:
- She supports environmental justice.

There are so many things to consider when choosing the university you will attend. Location? Level of academia? Price?
Today's college-bound students are increasingly interested in how green their prospective universities are, according to the Princeton Review survey.
Most of us are very trusting when it comes to food labels. When it says "Healthy!" or "All Natural!" we generally accept that at face value and don't take into consideration what it really means. Many Americans are eating what they think is very healthy, but without fully understanding how the food companies go through loopholes to label their food "all natural" for example. One of the biggest offenders tends to be "wheat bread."

The recent outbreak of Swine Flu -- Influenza A(H1N1) -- is not passed through eating meat but it does makes us reflect on healthy lifestyles and eating habits.
Want to eat better but aren't sure what to begin?
Here is great checklist of tips on what you and your family can do to eat healthier, shop smarter and make sustainable choices, from SustainableTable.org:
- Educated Yourself -- Learn about the kind of food you're eating. Is it local? Is it sustainable?
- Shop Sustainable -- Don’t expect to change everything overnight. Start with one item and pledge to buy it sustainably, such as buying one organic dairy, meat or produce item at your supermarket or one local food at a nearby farmers’ market. Visit the Eat Well guide to find local sources for sustainable food.
