The California Academy of Science, located in San Francisco, CA opened the world's first green museum this month. After 10 years and $500 million, the Academy is becoming a cultural icon due to its sustainable architecture and in-house green practices.

"[This] museum is redefining what it means to be a science museum," boasts the Academy's website. It encompasses every part of life, from the planetarium to the aquarium to the four-story rainforest and every section is filled with events and exhibits to engage all members of the family.

"the total message of the building is a green message. It's about life, how we got here, the marvelous diversity of life, it's preciousness, and the choices we face in learning how to stay," explained Executive Director Dr. Gregory C. Farrington.
