sonia sotomayorPresident Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court this week and since an appointment to the Supreme Court is lifelong, we hope she has strong green views.

From her stance on greenhouse gas regulations to her understanding of the EPA, there are many ways to better understand just what shade of green Sotomayor is:

  • She supports environmental justice.

According to Grist, Sotomayor's record indicates that she acknowledges the rights of citizens to challenge regulatory authorities if they fail to uphold their legal mandate, and that she also affirms the authority of environmental regulatory agencies. (This perspective greatly differs from several conservative Supreme Court justices – Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, and Samuel Alito – who have repeatedly challenged both these premises.)

  • On Greenhouse Gas Regulation. While Sotomayor has not come out with a clear position/ruling directly to climate change, we can take not of previous cases shes been involved in concerning it. There was a major 2006 case (Connecticut v. American Electric Power Company Inc.) in which she was one of three judges hearing the case. Sotomayor, who was the only Democratic nominee on the panel, indicated during the trial that she believes there is a need for regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. She is quoted as saying - "I have absolutely no idea about the science of global warming," she said at one point during the hearing. "But if the science is right, we have relegated ourselves to killing the world in the foreseeable future. Not in centuries to come but in the very near future."
  • Overall, Environmentalists seem to like what they see in her as the justice pick.

What do you think of Obama’s pick?
