India agreed for the first time to set numerical targets for curbing its greenhouse gas emissions! This is major news in the fight against climate change and it puts more needed pressure on the United States and the Obama Administration to step up and deliver on its own pledges to cut carbon emissions.

The Indian Environment Minister said that legislation was being drafted in Delhi to limit India’s carbon footprint and therefore, in the process repair his country’s reputation for intransigence on climate change before the crucial UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December.

This announcement is a real breakthrough! For a long time India has continued to refused to commit itself to any carbon cuts on the ground that its per capita emissions are much lower than other developed countries’ and any caps would slow down its economic development.

This is wonderful news in the flight for the climate! Come on America!
