mountaintop removalOver 500 of America’s oldest mountains have been destroyed by mountaintop removal coal mining – but a majority of Americans don’t realize that they are connected to this destruction through their electricity. We need to get this message out across the country and put the pressure on Washington to end mountaintop removal.

bike to work week 2010May is National Bike Month! The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May 17-21 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 21.

Cycling is a great way to avoid traffic and a fun way to get around. It's also far less stressful on the environment than driving. Plus it's good for your health. While it may not be possible (or safe) for some of us to ride a bicycle to the office, we've got the entire month to celebrate two-wheeling as an alternative to motorized vehicles.

The Kansas City Star Editorial Board writes:

The goal of the week that began Monday and runs through Friday isn’t to turn the city into a car-free zone. But it is to encourage everyone to make a trip or two without a car. Walk or ride a bike to the grocery. Commute by bus or bike on a sunny day.

Here's a look at some Bike Week events happening in cities around the U.S. Will you ride your bike to work or on errands this week? Does your city make it's streets accessible for cyclists to share the road?

gulf oilspill bp photo courtesy NASAMore than three weeks after an oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico there is no reliable estimate of how much oil is spilling into the ocean nor when the leak might be sealed.

Last month, the Deepwater Horizon, an ultra-deepwater drilling rig leased by BP, sank, leading to what may become one of the greatest environmental disasters in United States history. While the potential short- and long-term environmental costs are unknown, it is clear that the oil-slicked sea will soon come ashore on the Alabama and Mississippi coastline. And as the oil continues gushing from under the sea at volumes estimated anywhere between 5,000 and 70,000 barrels per day, it's anyone's guess as to how long it might take to clean up the mess with hurricane season just weeks away.
