More than 1 Million Participate in Friends of Live Earth events in India

Despite our decision to cancel our Live Earth India event in December 2008 because of the Mumbai terrorist attacks, we were thrilled that so many of our community partners in India decided to continue with the "Friends of Live Earth" events they had already planned. Live Earth continues to work for solutions to the climate crisis for the good of the people of India and around the world. We were inspired by the enthusiastic response to the "Friends of Live Earth India" program we have received from environmental, educational, corporate, and other organizations throughout India and internationally, and we welcomed the opportunity to reach individuals, students, and employees through the "Friends" events, creating a lasting legacy of awareness and change. We felt that the Friends of Live Earth Program was one of the best ways we could continue to support our mission after the cancellation of our concert event.

If you’re in the Washington, DC area, head over to the Environmental Film Festival from March 11th-22nd. It's a massive environmental festival in its 17th year running, with 52 venues, 141 films, and 24,000+ attendees this year. The festival has quickly become the leading showcase for environmental films in the United States, as it is completely devoted to the awareness of environmental issues.

The South by Southwest 2009 Music and Media Conference is underway through March 21 in Austin, Texas. This amazing festival is filled with tons of movie screenings, concerts and panel discussions.

Since its creation in 1987, SXSW has been at the epicenter of all the latest and greatest in online media, music and movies. So it's not surprising that, amid highly increased public awareness of environmental issues, the festival is hosting lots of green themed panel discussions.

kiefersutherlandWhen Jimmy Fallon took over NBC's "Late Night" show at the beginning of the month, he had one of the first studios on television that is entirely eco-friendly! "Everything is recycled," he told the The NY Post. "We are building everything with recycled metals and using all green lighting.”

Fox's hit series 24 is also going green! They have announced they are going carbon neutral, according to an announcement before the show earlier this week.

OscarI’m sure many of you watched the Oscars last night. Congrats to Slumdog Millionaire for sweeping the awards! We also thought Hugh Jackman did a great job as a first time host and the musical ensembles were classic. We’d like to give a huge shout out to the use of recycled materials for some of his performances! Notice the cool recycled cardboard props they used?

The big disappointment was the major lack of environmental sustainability examples during the ceremony. Other than alternative-fuel chauffeur company econation shuttling some stars to the show in the 2010 Prius, there wasn’t much to get green and excited about.

The Oscars ceremony seemed to completely abandon last year’s strive to be green. They used to highlight their efforts in a special section on their website about the ongoing green efforts of the Academy Awards and how they were making big changes. But this year that section disappeared.
