Social media is about connecting people and providing the tools necessary to have a conversation. That global conversation is an extremely powerful platform for spreading information and awareness about social causes and issues. That's one of the reasons charities can benefit so greatly from being active on social media channels. But you can also do a lot to help your favorite charity or causes you are passionate about through social media.

Below is a list of 10 ways you can use social media to show your support for issues that are important to you. If you can think of any other ways to help charities via social web tools, please add them in the comments.

china-warmingAfter years of climate inaction -- China recently surpassed the U.S. as the world's largest emitter of CO2 -- the country is ramping up efforts to transition to a clean-energy economy.

The Chinese government announced a plan to produce 20 percent of it's energy from renewable sources by 2020 and is expected to spend billions on green technology as part of its economic stimulus package.

China is also working toward railway expansion, coal plant modernization, improving land use planning, and more.

The Climate and Energy Bill (formally the American Clean Energy and Security Act) may be voted on as soon as Friday in Washington.

This morning, Al Gore wrote:

"Make no mistake, this is the most important environmental vote of this generation. If passed this legislation will put us on the road to actually solving the climate crisis, in addition to building a green economy.

Contact your member of Congress and make sure they vote yes."
