In a sign that the sustainability movement is gathering more steam, WiserEarth celebrated its third anniversary yesterday, with some stunning growth statistics. The alternative to Facebook and Orkut, Wiser Earth now boasts 37,000+ people from 231 countries, regions and territories.

Thirty six days after the original Deep Horizon explosion and the beginning of the United States' worst eco-crisis ever, BP will seek to end this oil spill nightmare with its two-day Top Kill procedure. The cement mud mix would effectively plug the well, the latest in many failed attempts to end the oil spill. In the latest effort to quell the spill and public dissatisfaction, BP will show the procedure live on video. But what remains to be seen is what will finally be killed, the oil spill or the last vestiges of public trust for BP and the Obama Administration's crisis response team.

bike to work week 2010May is National Bike Month! The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May 17-21 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 21.

Cycling is a great way to avoid traffic and a fun way to get around. It's also far less stressful on the environment than driving. Plus it's good for your health. While it may not be possible (or safe) for some of us to ride a bicycle to the office, we've got the entire month to celebrate two-wheeling as an alternative to motorized vehicles.

The Kansas City Star Editorial Board writes:

The goal of the week that began Monday and runs through Friday isn’t to turn the city into a car-free zone. But it is to encourage everyone to make a trip or two without a car. Walk or ride a bike to the grocery. Commute by bus or bike on a sunny day.

Here's a look at some Bike Week events happening in cities around the U.S. Will you ride your bike to work or on errands this week? Does your city make it's streets accessible for cyclists to share the road?

mountaintop removalOver 500 of America’s oldest mountains have been destroyed by mountaintop removal coal mining – but a majority of Americans don’t realize that they are connected to this destruction through their electricity. We need to get this message out across the country and put the pressure on Washington to end mountaintop removal.

Cleaning up seems to be a prescient topic with the horrible BP oil spill (see a recent satellite image here)facing the country and Gulf States in particular. It's too bad that it takes an accident of this nature to focus our attention on this region's beautiful resources and its conservation efforts.

gulf oilspill bp photo courtesy NASAMore than three weeks after an oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico there is no reliable estimate of how much oil is spilling into the ocean nor when the leak might be sealed.

Last month, the Deepwater Horizon, an ultra-deepwater drilling rig leased by BP, sank, leading to what may become one of the greatest environmental disasters in United States history. While the potential short- and long-term environmental costs are unknown, it is clear that the oil-slicked sea will soon come ashore on the Alabama and Mississippi coastline. And as the oil continues gushing from under the sea at volumes estimated anywhere between 5,000 and 70,000 barrels per day, it's anyone's guess as to how long it might take to clean up the mess with hurricane season just weeks away.

Off shore drilling provisions with a state veto option are still a part of the Climate Bill in the wake of the horrible, ongoing BP Deep Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (image courtesy of the Grassroots Mapping project). While many claim the provisions as necessary to get 60 votes and surpass a GOP filibuster, there's no excuse for this. Off shore drilling has no place in the Climate Bill introduced last week.

sea turtles gulf oil spill

As oil from the ongoing Deepwater BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico approaches the U.S. coastline, wildlife preservationists are redoubling efforts to protect and safe the diverse animal life that flourishes in the region. Hundreds of animals have already died as a result of the oil spill, including sea turtles, dolphins, and birds. Check on conservation efforts taking place now via this story (and the photos below) from the NRDC's OnEarth blog.
