Human actions are destroying Earth's oceans: what can we do about it?

Discovery's Planet Green teamed up with the NRDC to explore such questions in the documentary "Acid Test," hosted by Sigourney Weaver. "Acid Test" premieres tonight at 10:30 EDT as part of Planet Green's Blue August series.

Bottled water sales have tripled in the past 10 years, to about $4 billion a year. This crazy influx of sales is due to millions of dollars spent on deceiving marketing campaigns to make us think bottled water is healthier, cleaner and safe for the environment.

On April 14th Hugh posted the following call on his Twitter page:

“I will donate 100K to one individual's favorite non profit organization. Of course, you must convince me why by using 140 characters or less.”

He received thousands of suggestions and finally made his difficult decision this morning.

More than 10,000 individual donors contributed just shy of $250,000 during the February 12th global Twestival.

The people are listening and just in time for World Water Week! According to two recent studies, more of the population is becoming perfectly happy to stick with their tap water instead of buying bottled. This is wonderful news considering the millions of dollars in marketing that companies spend each year to convince people that bottled water is better, when in fact dozens of taste tests have proven otherwise. Not to mention bottled waters lasting impact on the environment.

UNICEF will be launching an internet radio station to raise awareness, support and donations for the Tap Project – an annual effort to help the 1 billion people around the world that don’t have access to clean drinking water. Twestival raises 250,000 for charity: waterOn February 12th, more than 200 cities around the world held Twestivals, bringing together the Twitter community for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water. Twestival was a great success, creating a global buzz while raising more than $250,000 to provide clean water for some of the 1.1 billion who live without it.
