Earth Hour 2009
In what we hope will be the world’s largest mass participation event, Earth Hour will be the culmination of one billion people around the globe, in more than 1,000 cities turning off lights. This comes as perfect timing to send a message to the leaders at the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Change Conference that we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the short and long term benefit of the planet.
In 2008, 50 million people across 35 countries turned off their lights for one hour. Lets see how much bigger we can make it this year. And with your help we can. Already hundreds of icons and landmarks around the world have signed up to turn their lights off for Earth Hour 2009 including – the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sydney Opera House, Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens and The London Eye, among many others.
Here is what you can do:
1. Turn out your non-essential lighting during Earth Hour, Saturday March 28, between 8:30-9:30 pm local time in all buildings you can control.
2. Sign up at http://www.earthhour.org/ to show your commitment to Earth Hour and to get further details.
3. Promote and encourage your friends, family and co-workers to participate in Earth Hour.
See you in the dark!

I'm all for it. As I say
I'm all for it. As I say here, I think we now use too much light in our houses anyway. Candlelight brings people a lot closer.
Don't look at this as an hour
Don't look at this as an hour of darkness, think of it as the brightness of a new hour...a new future. GO GREEN!
i contacted our mayor, our
i contacted our mayor, our city chamber of commerce, the parks & rec dept, and all of our local media to ask them to help us get our city behind this global effort to connect with this simple ACT of flipping a switch for one hour. imagine if this really catches on - how we can springboard to a whole day of not just lights off but a power free day - we need some meaningful effective holidays that don't revolve around purchasing more plastic junk. this is so exciting...i hope our city will join you all. xoxoxox

p.s. if we get permission to
p.s. if we get permission to turn off the lights of our city clocktower (our iconic landmark) we plan to host a candlelight desert-luck in the park :) Ray Bradbury wrote a great children's book - TURN ON THE NIGHT. not only will we make a statement about our willingness to connect and to problem solve, but we can make an effective dent in the light pollution that night as well - what an impressive picture from space it would make! :)
Why not just keep lights off
Why not just keep lights off permanently and use them only where you need them? In Hilo, Hawaii they keep the municiple lights very dim and a deep orange and it lights the way just fine. In fact it is better because you can see into the shadows because you aren't blinded by the bright lights.
Great idea to get the whole
Great idea to get the whole world involved in saving our planet. We should devote a hour a year for the whole planet to pay it forward!!!
