Think you've greened every part of your life, but have no control over your office? Think again. As many of you spend a significant amount of time at work, whether it’s at the office, at home, or somewhere else, there are always measures you can take to reduce your impact. Here are a few easy steps that can make all the difference.
- Power Down. Using a screen saver requires as much energy as surfing the web. If one million people shut down their office computers at night, up to 45,000 tons of CO2 per year. So help out, and shut your computer down when you leave at night
- Flip the Switch. Get into the habit of turning the lights out when you leave a room. If your office has a kitchen, be sure to turn the lights out when you aren’t using it (and unplugging the appliances!). This trick will serve you, your energy bill, and the environment well, not only at work but also at home.
- Bring your own coffee/ tea mug instead of using couple paper or Styrofoam cups each day
- Paper. Instead of printing out every e-mail or file, learn to love reading it on the screen. But if you must print it, be sure to use recycled paper or recycle it after use; paper makes up one-third of all waste. Recycling one ton of office paper saves almost six tons of CO2 released by throwing it away.
- Fresh Air. Instead of using air conditioning to keep your building comfortable, open the windows to bring in fresh air and give your AC a break.
