Plastic bags have become a serious pollution issue in recent decades. But we’re happy to see that many countries and cities are doing what they can to reduce the waste with new laws and bans in the works. Cities in the U.S. like San Francisco, Austin and Malibu are working hard to ban plastic bags.
China was facing its own massive plastic bag problem, often referred to as “white pollution." So in a step to drastically reduce the use of bags, the Chinese government passed a country-wide plastic bag ban in January 2008. The law specifically states that supermarkets and other sales outlets are prohibited from providing free plastic bags.
Before the ban was implemented, China was using an astonishing 3 billion plastic bags DAILY! After a year of the ban, the NRDC announced that supermarkets had in fact reduced the usage by 66% and avoided using a total of around 40 billion bags. This is a massive leap in the right direction for China, and hopefully the rest of the world.
