Babcock Ranch Solar City FloridaDespite the country’s recession, one developer is planning to build the world’s first solar city in Florida. Babcock Ranch would be a true community within itself, with homes, offices, factories and stores.

This massive 17,800-acre project would use half of the land specifically for nature preserves, agriculture and other open spaces for various reasons (parks, etc).

Florida Power & Light Co., Florida’s largest electric utility company, plans to build a $300 million 75-megawatt solar photovoltaic array plant on the property, about 20 miles from Fort Myers on the Gulf Coast. The energy generated there would supply the entire city.

It seems they have thoroughly planned out all aspects of the proposed solar city. For example, commercial buildings will have rooftop solar panels, and there will also be "solar kiosks" throughout so that electric vehicle owners can recharge their cars.

It is being called the "City of Tomorrow”. Click here to read more.
