Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder at Mandela DayStevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Jesse McCartney, and will.i.am were among the stars to honor Nelson Mandela on his 91st birthday at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Saturday.

Thousands were in attendance -- with many more watching online -- to celebrate the life and legacy of South African social activist Nelson Mandela. France's first lady Carla Bruni made her American stage debut alongside Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart (see video below).

Mandela could not attend the event himself -- doctors have advised him to not travel internationally -- but his presence was felt through the music of Aretha Franklin (with Josh Groban), the Soweto Gospel Choir, Angelique Kidjo, and a Lil' Kim/Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time" duet.
