This week is National Farmers Market Week!

farmers marketU.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack designated the week of August 2-8 to honor the great farmers markets around the country, and encourage everyone to visit their local farmers market!

The USDA estimates that there are about 4,900 farmers markets throughout America and over 3 million consumers shop there, buying the fresh fruits and vegetables grown by the 60,000 farmers who sell their fresh goodness there.

Furthermore, they estimate that these markets generate more than one billion dollars in consumer spending each year!! This is cause to celebrate.

Farmers' markets are one of the easiest ways to not only buy locally, but to support the economy of our local farmers and to eat healthier.

It's really easy to celebrate this week! Just get out there and enjoy the sunshine and buy all that wonderful local food! You can find Farmers Markets near you by searching localharvest.org.
