free trade chocolatesValentine’s Day is fast approaching! February 14th is Saturday and you want to be prepared, but while you’re at it why not show some love for the planet too. It doesn’t take much to green your Valentine’s gifts and festivities. You will be surprised at how much love you can spread around the world. Here are some great tips you can use to show your loved one you care about them, and the planet.

1. Buy valentine cards from local artists who make greeting cards out of recycled material.

2. Make your own valentine cards with recycled items and things from nature such as dried flowers, satin ribbons, fabric hearts.

picture-2 Every year GreenBiz.com releases a State of Green Business Report which sets out to measure the environmental impacts of major businesses around the world.

This year's efforts revealed mixed results: More companies were doing more things, but moving the needle of environmental progress only slightly, if at all. The 2009 report seemed to be mixed with encouraging and discouraging news.

By rallying together globally, under short timescales, for a single aim on the same day, the Twestival hopes to bring awareness to the global water crisis. ntiToday, February 5th, the National Teach-In on Global Warming strives to engage over a million Americans in solutions-driven dialogue. As educators, students and citizens, we owe our nation a focused conversation about the critical decisions that will determine if our descendants will inherit a prosperous or an impoverished planet.

Al Gore Google EarthFormer Vice President and Live Earth partner Al Gore joined Google CEO Eric Schmidt talked about Google, the ocean, and climate change at the California Academy of Sciences on Monday.

The pair revealed how the latest enhancements to Google Earth will help us better understand our oceans and the effect of global warming.

Google Earth users can now also observe the melting of the polar ice caps and glaciers through history. In addition to mapping the contours of the sea floor, the application also includes data points and informative multimedia about sea life and the sea itself.

StaycationWant to get away? Perhaps it's time for a "staycation." Be a tourist in your own town and save money while reducing your carbon footprint. According to The Green Life:

An ideal "staycation" should be work-free and fun, so skip unpleasant chores, unplug the phone, and hide your laptop if necessary. Set a festive mood by donning your vacation duds and scheduling day hikes, bike rides, and visits to local museums.

U.S. President Obama appointed Vice President Joe Biden chairman of a new Middle Class Task Force this morning. The first task of the task force is to find ways to create green jobs and improve home energy efficiency.

"Green jobs are jobs that provide products and services which use renewable energy resources, reduce pollution, conserve energy and natural resources and reconstitute waste," part of Obama's stimulus plan, which would double renewable energy to about 10 percent of the nation’s total production and create 3 million jobs.
